This is long. This is a rant. You need to read it. This is Scamp. He's one of the two dogs we are driving to New England this weekend. Scamp has some social anxiety issues that make normal transport dangerous for him. To acclimate him to car riding I invited him to be my ride along partner at work today. He drew lots of admirers and so many folks were thrilled to hear he had found a forever home. I had one woman in a gas station parking lot ask me who his lucky new owners were. I TRIED to tell her that he was being adopted by an amazing lesbian couple who were not intimidated by his issues and had experience working with dogs like Scamp and he was going to be spoiled rotten! What I managed to get out was "He's being adopted by an amazing lesbian..." at which point I was interrupted and cut off by the statement "I thought you were a Christian based rescue! WHY are you adopting dogs to gay people?!" .... (For the record I overcame the urge to strangle her on the spot). I normally leave politics and religion out of rescue bc the dogs don't care who you vote for or who you pray to, but this flew up my nose sideways and I feel the need to tell everyone EXACTLY how BBAR works. We ARE a Christian based rescue and all feel very strongly about our personal beliefs. Especially that verse that says love your neighbor. Jesus told his followers that loving God and loving your neighbor was THE MOST important Commandment in the Bible. That includes your black neighbor, your Jewish neighbor, your poor neighbor and your GAY neighbor! How is declining an adoption application and depriving Scamp, or any other dog, of the PERFECT home for him making "a statement for Christianity"? Huh? We afraid being raised by lesbians is gonna make Scamp a lesbian? We afraid somebody might think that we believe it is OK to treat everyone equally? We believe its OK to love people without agreeing with everything they do? We afraid somebody might think we have the dog's best interest at heart? GOD FORBID anybody think that about us!!! The woman at the gas station was told, as i walked away, that yes, he was being adopted by lesbians, and the first order of business was to cut his hair off really short and make him wear Birkenstocks. For the record, we are an equal opportunity adoption agency. If you will love our dog the way we do, care for him, provide for him, and you are the best match for our dog... You can adopt from our CHRISTIAN rescue! Anyone who has a problem with that needs to spend some time on that branch in their eye before they criticize someone else (and if you don't get that reference then I suggest you read that Bible you want so badly to thump!).
Lovers of animals.
